From the 5-Step Process to The GRANTED Method™: A New Way to Think About Grant Success
Sep 01, 2026For more than a decade, Granted Fundraising Consultants™ has helped nonprofits approach grant fundraising strategically—not simply by chasing opportunities, but by building the foundation for successful, sustainable funding.
At the heart of our work has always been our 5-Step Process, a framework designed to help organizations prepare for, pursue, and secure grant funding.
As GRANTED™ has grown, so has our understanding of what organizations truly need to be successful.
We realized that our 5-Step Process was doing more than guiding organizations through grant development. It was teaching organizations how to think strategically about grant fundraising.
So, we’ve evolved it.
Introducing The GRANTED Method™.
What is The GRANTED Method™?
The GRANTED Method™ is the proprietary framework that now informs Granted Fundraising’s consulting, training, Granted Guide™ subscription, and educational resources.
It builds on the principles of our original 5-Step Process while making the progression—and the philosophy behind our work—clearer.
At its core, The GRANTED Method™ follows one simple principle:
Don’t start by looking for grants. Start by getting your organization ready to pursue the right grants.
That means understanding the need, refining the program, determining the resources required, developing a compelling story, and only then identifying the funders who are the best fit.
The result is a more strategic approach to grant fundraising—one that focuses on fit rather than volume, preparation rather than reaction, and capacity rather than dependency.
The GRANTED Method™ at a Glance
G — Ground the Need
Before an organization can make a compelling case for funding, it needs to understand and articulate the problem it is uniquely positioned to address.
Grounding the need means looking closely at community needs, research, data, gaps in services, the target population, and your organization’s mission and role.
The goal is to answer:
What problem are we trying to solve, and why does it matter?
A strong understanding of the need creates the foundation for everything that follows.
R — Refine the Program
Once the need is clearly established, it’s time to define the response.
Refining the program means developing a strong, fundable initiative that directly addresses the identified need. This includes clarifying goals, objectives, activities, timelines, target populations, partnerships, outcomes, and evaluation strategies.
The goal is to answer:
What are we going to do, and what difference will it make?
A well-defined program is much easier to communicate—and much easier for a funder to understand and support.
A — Assemble the Resources
Great programs require resources.
Before searching for a funder, organizations need to understand what it will actually take to implement the program successfully.
This includes developing the project budget, identifying existing resources, considering matching funds and in-kind contributions, determining the funding need, and thinking about sustainability.
The goal is to answer:
What resources do we need to make this happen?
This step helps organizations move beyond an arbitrary funding request and toward a clear, defensible investment strategy.
N — Narrate the Impact
Now that the need, program, and resources are clear, it’s time to tell the story.
Narrating the impact means translating all of that information into a compelling case for support. It involves communicating your organization’s capacity, the importance of the program, the people who will benefit, the outcomes you expect, and why an investment will make a meaningful difference.
The goal is to answer:
How do we communicate our value in a way that inspires investment?
Strong grant writing isn’t simply about answering application questions. It’s about creating a coherent story that connects need → response → resources → impact.
T — Target the Right Funders
Only after the first four steps are complete should an organization begin looking for funding opportunities.
This is one of the most important principles behind The GRANTED Method.
Too often, organizations start with:
“What grants are available?”
We believe the better question is:
“Who is most likely to invest in the work we are prepared to do?”
Targeting the right funders means researching opportunities based on mission alignment, funding priorities, geography, eligibility, grant size, program fit, application requirements, and other factors.
It also means prioritizing prospects and developing relationships rather than simply creating a long list of potential funders.
The goal is to answer:
Who is most likely to invest in this work?
The right grant isn’t necessarily the biggest grant or the easiest application.
It’s the grant that represents a strong fit between the funder’s priorities and your organization’s work.
And Then There’s ED: Educate & Develop
There’s one important element of The GRANTED Method™ that doesn’t fit neatly into a linear sequence.
That’s ED: Educate & Develop.
Education and development aren’t the final step. They’re the thread that runs through the entire method.
At Granted, we believe that successful grant fundraising should leave an organization stronger and more capable than it was before.
That means educating staff about how to articulate community need. Developing program-planning skills. Strengthening financial and resource-development knowledge. Teaching effective grant communication. Building prospecting and relationship-management skills. Creating internal systems. Engaging leadership and boards.
In other words, we’re not interested in creating organizations that need a grant consultant forever.
We’re interested in helping organizations build the knowledge, skills, systems, and confidence to sustain grant success.
That’s what ED — Educate & Develop represents.
Why We Evolved the 5-Step Process
Our original 5-Step Process remains an important part of Granted’s history and the foundation of our approach.
But The GRANTED Method™ gives us a way to express something we’ve learned through years of working with nonprofits:
Grant success doesn’t begin with a grant application.
It begins long before the application is released.
It begins with a clearly understood need.
A thoughtfully designed program.
A realistic resource strategy.
A compelling case for support.
And a deliberate strategy for identifying the funders who are most likely to care about the work.
That is why Targeting the Right Funders comes last in the core five-step sequence.
We’re not saying that prospect research isn’t important. Quite the opposite. It’s incredibly important.
We’re saying that prospect research is most effective when you know exactly what you’re looking for.
When you understand your need, program, resources, and story, you can evaluate funding opportunities strategically instead of trying to reshape your organization around whatever grant happens to be available.
The GRANTED Method Is More Than a Grant-Writing Process
The evolution from the 5-Step Process to The GRANTED Method reflects an evolution in how we think about our work.
Granted Fundraising isn’t simply in the business of helping organizations submit grant applications.
We’re in the business of helping nonprofits build grant capacity.
That philosophy now informs everything we do.
Consulting helps organizations apply the methodology to their unique goals and challenges.
Granted Guide™ provides ongoing education and practical tools to help organizations build their internal grant capacity.
And our developing suite of AI-powered tools will give organizations new ways to apply the principles of The GRANTED Method™ when and where they need them.
The methodology gives all of these offerings a common foundation.
What’s Next for Granted?
The GRANTED Method™ is an evolution, but it is also a foundation for what’s next.
As we continue developing the methodology, we envision new educational resources, training opportunities, tools, and ways for nonprofit professionals to learn and apply the approach.
Ultimately, our goal is bigger than helping organizations win individual grants.
We want to help organizations develop the knowledge, systems, strategy, and confidence to build sustainable grant programs.
That’s the promise behind The GRANTED Method™.
Ground the Need.
Refine the Program.
Assemble the Resources.
Narrate the Impact.
Target the Right Funders.
And throughout it all:
Educate & Develop.
Because when nonprofits become better at understanding their work, communicating their impact, identifying the right opportunities, and building internal capacity, grant fundraising becomes more than a source of revenue.
It becomes a sustainable organizational strategy.
The GRANTED Method™ is a proprietary methodology of Granted Fundraising Consultants™.
